Thousands of tourists have been caught up in chaos at a ski resort in Italy's Apennines. Many were day trippers lured by a viral TikTok video promoting the area, while others took advantage of reduced ticket prices.
Roccaraso, a mountain town in the Apennines, was littered with rubbish after around 10,000 tourists arrived in 260 buses last Sunday, frustrating locals and overwhelming local businesses. What was meant to be an affordable trip for families turned into a "panic" as mountain roads were clogged with buses and cars, leaving visitors stranded.
Most of the visitors, who had traveled about two hours from Naples, had bought "all-inclusive" trips for just 20 euros through travel agencies and TikTok ads. They were helped by influencer Rita De Crescenzo, who promoted the resort in her video, calling Roccaraso a "beautiful place." However, many tourists who were expecting a "beautiful weekend" faced difficult conditions, as the resort's services were inadequate and many activities were canceled.
In addition to problems with transportation and restaurants, tourists were unhappy with the congestion and lack of infrastructure. Local authorities have taken measures to limit the number of buses that can enter the city and have requested support from the army to prevent a repeat of the situation. (A2 Televizion)
