Ludovic Mollier, a French craftsman, found a bottle containing a letter with a message from 130 years ago inside. This happened in Matour, a small commune located in the Burgundy region of France, where one of the residents decided to do renovation work on an old house that was hiding a secret.
When he removed the old wooden floor, Mollier found a kind of time capsule: a crystal bottle with a manuscript inside. At first, the artisan didn't pay attention to it, thinking it was trash, but when he threw it away, he realized there was something inside.
This was the message of the manuscript. The bottle held the letter for 130 years, which was found in good condition. The author of the manuscript was Guillaume Mandelier, a wine merchant who on June 15, 1894, wrote, rolled and preserved this relic to enable the French culture of that time to be better known decades later.
In the document, Mandelier explained that he himself had hidden the bottle under the floor and requested that anyone who discovered it say a traditional Catholic prayer for the deceased: “This floor was laid by me, Guillaume Mandelier, wine merchant in Matour on June 15, 1894. Those who tear it down will say a ‘De Profundis’ for my soul and drink in my honor.” He also requested that a glass be returned in his honor.
The residents have fulfilled his wishes. The municipality of Matour has decided to preserve the original document in the Heritage House, a small museum that reflects the history of the place.
