Happier, healthier and more productive, study confirms benefits of short

Better physical and mental health, greater productivity and greater satisfaction, in addition to the same salary as before. This is the conclusion of a study on the four-day workweek, the largest published to date, in Nature Human Behavior. The study was conducted with nearly 2,900 employees from 141 companies in six countries that adopted a four-day workweek, writes A2 CNN. Fears that less time available to perform the same tasks would lead to additional stress, seem unfounded.

Scientists found no evidence of this effect, which, if present, is outweighed by the benefits of increased rest.

Wen Fan, a sociologist at Boston College in Massachusetts, and his colleagues analyzed data from 2,896 people from 141 companies in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom that had participated in a pilot program run by the nonprofit 4 Day Week Global to help companies implement a four-day workweek, A2 CNN reports.

For eight weeks, companies worked with expert trainers to overhaul their workflows to 80% of their previous work hours, keeping employees on the same pay scale as before. Clearly inefficient and time-consuming processes, such as unnecessary meetings, were eliminated, and employees completed questionnaires about their mental well-being, including what frustrated them in the workplace, A2 CNN reports.

After six months, those who had participated in the short workweek self-reported increased productivity, better health, and greater job satisfaction compared to employees at 12 companies who had considered participating in the program but then dropped out.

Compared to the questionnaires completed at the beginning, employees at the 141 participating companies also reported lower levels of professional fatigue, greater job satisfaction than before, and better mental and physical health. Scientists believe this may be due to better quality and quantity of sleep, less fatigue, and a feeling that their work style had improved. (A2 Televizion)
