Meet the countries that do not have an army

Each nation has its own uniqueness and among the distinguishing features, the military element is a fundamental component that represents the defense capacity.

However, there is a group of countries that, due to constitutional provisions, territorial extension or their way of life, do not have armed forces. Costa Rica is one of them. The constitution of this country has prohibited the existence of permanent armed forces since 1949. Instead of a regular army, the security of the country falls on the Public Force, charged with police functions. In case of conflicts, Costa Rica would depend on the support of other nations.

Panama follows suit. The Constitution has banned military forces since 1994, entrusting their security and defense to the Public Forces and the National Air Service.

In the global context, there are a number of countries and territories that, for various reasons, do not maintain armed forces. Some of them, such as Dominica, Grenada, Cayman Islands, Cook Islands, Faroe Islands, Kiribati, Micronesia, Montserrat, Nauru, Niue, Palau, French Polynesia, Saint Martin, Saint Lucia, Samoa, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, The Marshall Islands and the Solomon Islands have chosen not to have their own armies. This decision can be based on constitutional factors, international agreements or simply by the size of their territories.

In Europe, this list includes Andorra, the Vatican, Greenland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Monaco. In these cases, the security and protection of these territories depends on various agreements, internal security forces or alliances with neighboring nations.

This phenomenon reflects the diversity of approaches to security, from reliance on regional agreements to the absence of a conventional military structure. Each of these countries has developed distinct strategies to address defense needs, adapting to their specific circumstances and contributing to the richness of global geopolitics. (A2 Televizion)
