You may be looking forward to that time of year when you get to enjoy a cozy atmosphere in your home, with dim lighting and candles scented with cinnamon, vanilla and even ginger. Maybe this habit is one of your favorites for fall and winter, but Dr. Stephen Gundry gives us plenty of reasons why we shouldn't.
According to the expert, ordinary commercial candles can negatively affect the air we breathe in a closed space. And that's because in most scented candles, their base and their manufacturing ingredient is paraffin, a chemical compound that comes from petroleum.
This byproduct of mineral oil production, when burned, releases hydrocarbons, which can become highly toxic and eventually pollute our air, depleting oxygen. We certainly don't want that, despite the spiritual satisfaction it might bring us.
And as if that wasn't enough, scented candles, in addition to paraffin, also contain artificial fragrances, which in turn worsen breathing and can cause asthma. Artificial fragrances, which are also derived from toxic chemical compounds, in large quantities can even cause an imbalance in brain hormones. For these basic reasons, ordinary scented candles are considered dangerous, especially for people with breathing problems.
It is therefore recommended that we have properly ventilated spaces when we choose to light them or look for more organic and natural formulas, such as beeswax candles or candles without toxic chemical compounds.
