Police arrest suspect and seize explosive devices in the north

Kosovo police announced late Friday that they had arrested a man and confiscated explosive devices, ammunition and other suspicious items in the north of the country.

She said she conducted a search in North Mitrovica after receiving information about suspicious vehicles at a location in the city.

"The inspection was carried out in a house and its surrounding facilities," she said.

Police said they found and confiscated four M79 hand grenades, various types of ammunition, and other suspicious items.

In this case, the Police have arrested a 37-year-old man, for whom the court has ordered 48 hours of detention.

"In connection with the case, the suspect (MB), born in 1988, was arrested, who was escorted to the police station where, in the presence of his defense attorney, he was defended in silence," the police said.

Kosovo police have discovered and confiscated weapons and ammunition in the north on several occasions in recent years.

Northern Kosovo – inhabited by a Serb majority – has faced ongoing tensions in recent years and has been the site of several attacks.

In September 2023, an armed group of Serbs attacked the Kosovo Police in Banjska, Zvecan, killing one police officer. Three more attackers were killed in the ensuing exchange of fire.

Kosovo holds Serbia responsible for this attack, but Belgrade denies it.

In November last year, there were two grenade attacks by unknown persons against the municipality of Zvečan and a police station there, which caused damage.

Later that month, an explosion occurred at the Ibër-Lepenc water canal in a village in Zubin Potok, causing damage to the country's vital canal. Kosovo also blamed Serbia for this attack, which denied the allegations.

For Kosovo authorities, this was the most serious attack on the country's critical infrastructure since the 1998/99 war, with damages estimated at around 400,000 euros.

Municipalities in the north – North Mitrovica, Leposavic, Zubin Potok and Zvecan – are led by Albanian mayors, after Serbs resigned from Kosovo institutions and boycotted local elections held in 2023. REL (A2 Televizion)
