New protests in Belgrade and other cities, students block roads

Students in Serbia continued their street blockades yesterday evening. They are protesting the arrest of their colleagues before and during street clashes that followed Saturday's large anti-government demonstration in Belgrade, and calling for early elections.

In the capital, major intersections for car traffic, main roads and several bridges over the Sava River were blocked with trash cans and other materials.

As in recent days, when police intervene, demonstrators move quickly, repeating the blockades in other parts of the city. It is not known whether these demonstrations will continue throughout the night.

Similar forms of protests were recorded in the evening in several other cities in the country: Novi Sad, Niš, Valjevo, Cacak, Subotica, Zrenjanin.

President Aleksandar Vučić, the main target of the protest movement that opposes corruption, weak democracy and control over the media, warned against expanding such blockades to power plants and installations vital to the national economy, such as Belgrade airport, refineries, power plants, factories and construction sites. The response, he said, would be very harsh. In statements to the private, pro-government broadcaster Informer, Vučić said that with such actions, the students are losing consensus in society, with citizens increasingly intolerant and forced to wait long, be detoured and block traffic in these scorching hot days.

Vučić also expressed satisfaction with the success of his conservative SNS party in the repeat of the local vote yesterday at a polling station in Kosjeric (west), where the SNS had already won in the administrative round on June 8. (A2 Televizion)
