Students block three bridges in Novi Sad in the quarter after the incident

A large number of students and citizens organized on Saturday to block three bridges over the Danube River in Novi Sad, exactly three months after 15 people were killed as a result of the collapse of a concrete shelter at the city's railway station, the second largest in Serbia.

Students have set off from the University of Novi Sad campus towards the Varadin, Zhezhele and Liberty bridges, which will be blocked from 3:00 PM.

Some were seen holding signs reading "Three months - three bridges".

The bridges will be blocked initially for three hours and then the participants will gather at the Freedom Bridge, which they will block for 24 hours.

The students from Novi Sad were joined by students from Belgrade, who walked for two days from the capital.

Belgrade students rested in several towns until they reached Novi Sad, while local residents welcomed them with food.

The protest was also joined by around 1,000 motorcyclists who set off from Belgrade.

The ongoing protests have resulted in the resignation of Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević earlier this week, and a slew of concessions made by the populist government, which is trying to calm the resistance.

However, the students have insisted that they will continue the protest until their demands are met.

The students' demands for an end to the blockades include the publication of full documentation for the reconstruction of the Novi Sad railway station, to determine responsibility for the accident of November 1, 2024.

They also demand that the attackers of demonstrators across Serbia, during the protests that followed the accident, be identified and face criminal responsibility.

The demands also include the release of activists arrested during the protests, the suspension of criminal proceedings against them, and an increase in the budget for universities.

The authorities, on the other hand, claim to have met all the requirements.

The protest is being organized in the quarter of the tragedy in Novi Sad, which has sparked a large wave of protests, in which thousands of people have participated.

The protests have been led by students, who have blockaded dozens of universities.

They believe the incident is the result of government corruption in a major infrastructure project with a Chinese state-owned company. REL (A2 Televizion)
