800,000 deaths in 30 years from climate change and billions of dollars in damage

Nearly 800,000 people have died worldwide in the last 30 years due to more than 9,400 extreme weather events that have caused economic damages totaling $4.2 trillion, writes A2 CNN.

International media reports that Dominica, China and Honduras were the countries most affected by floods, storms and heat waves from 1993 to 2022. Italy, Greece and Spain also feature in the top 10 of the Germanwatch Climate Risk Index 2025. In 2022, these countries rank even higher, mainly due to intense heat waves.

Italy is in fifth place in the ranking of the most affected countries in the last 30 years and in third place in 2022. Italy results in economic losses of about 60 billion dollars and more than 38 thousand victims was the most affected country in Europe.

The report cites extreme floods in Ahrtal, Germany (2021) and Valencia, Spain, (2024) as examples of European authorities being too late to declare a state of emergency with catastrophic consequences. In both cases, more than 100 people died and many more were left homeless.

The results show that all countries around the world are affected.

"It doesn't differentiate between North and South. The main message there is that the North is not yet ready with disaster risk management and adaptation," said Lina Adil, policy advisor at Germanwatch and co-author of the report.

According to her, nations face different types of risks. On the one hand, there is the human impact: death, injury, homelessness and displacement, and economic loss. (A2 Televizion)
