United States President Donald Trump has asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to carry out direct strikes on Russian territory, including Moscow. According to sources in the Financial Times, Trump said he wants Ukraine to "make [the Russians] feel the pain" and force Russian President Vladimir Putin to sit at the negotiating table, writes A2 CNN.
In a phone call on July 4, Trump reportedly asked: "Volodymyr, can you hit Moscow?... What about St. Petersburg?"
Zelensky reportedly gave a clear answer: "Absolutely. We can, if you give us the weapons."
Following this conversation, Kiev received from Trump's aides a list of possible long-range strike systems, which could be delivered through transfers from third countries, writes A2 CNN.
Although Trump has shown a more open stance on supplying Ukraine with weapons, the United States remains reserved about sending Tomahawk missiles, with a range of up to 1,600 kilometers.
The proposal to supply Ukraine with weapons was made public on Monday, when Trump announced plans to sell billions of dollars in weapons through NATO allies including the UK, France and Germany. Speaking to the BBC this morning, Trump declared: “I am disappointed, but not resigned, with Putin.” (A2 Televizion)
