South Korean president arrested after hours-long standoff with authorities

South Korean authorities have arrested President Yoon Suk-yeol, who faces charges of sedition and abuse of power, following an attempt to impose martial law last month. Yoon is now at the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) and according to international media he has agreed to be questioned, writes A2 CNN.

Authorities served the warrant after an hours-long standoff with his security staff and supporters, who saw investigators using ladders and cables to enter Yoon's residence.

President Yoon has been holed up in his fortified residence for weeks surrounded by his Presidential Security Service team, evading arrest as investigators tried to arrest him earlier this month but failed. He faces several investigations and an impeachment trial, A2 CNN reports.

This is the first time in South Korean history that a sitting president has been arrested, although the country has a history of prosecuting and imprisoning former leaders.

Following his arrest, Yoon released a pre-recorded video message on Wednesday, in which he again dismissed the investigations against him as "illegal."

"Today, when I saw them invade the security perimeter with fire tools, I decided to appear before the CIO, even though it is an illegal investigation, to prevent any unpleasant bloodshed," Yoon said. (A2 Televizion)
