The European Union has decided to suspend tariff countermeasures against the United States for 90 days, A2 CNN reports. The announcement was made by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in a reaction on the social network X. "We want to give negotiations a chance," Von Der Leyen said on X.
"While we finalise the adoption of EU countermeasures that saw strong support from our member states, we will put them on hold for 90 days." The European Union will launch counter-tariffs on around 21 billion euros of US imports from next Tuesday in response to Trump's 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium.
It is still assessing how to respond to tariffs on American cars and the broader 10% tax that is still in effect. Trump's surprise decision to halt most tariffs brought relief to battered global markets even as it sparked a trade war with China. (A2 Televizion)
