US President Joe Biden wrapped up his half-century political career with a final speech in the Oval Office on Wednesday, as he sought to seal a legacy eclipsed by Democrats' failure to stop Trump from returning to the White House. He began the speech with a family message, urging Americans to stay united. But he quickly moved on to warning about the dangers of the concentration of power in the hands of oligarchs in the US.
"I have no doubt that America is in a position to continue its successes. That is why I am giving this farewell address today. I want to warn the country about something that has been very troubling to me. This is dangerous: it is a dangerous concentration of power in the hands of a few very wealthy people. The dangerous consequences are the abuses of power if left unchecked. Today an oligarchy is taking shape in the United States, with extreme wealth, power and influence threatening our democracy and fundamental rights."
He warned of a “technological-industrial complex” that, he said, is bringing about an “avalanche of misinformation and disinformation, enabling the abuse of power.” The free press is being destroyed, he stressed.
Trump, to whom Biden will hand over the reins on Monday afternoon, has tapped billionaire Elon Musk as a special adviser to reduce federal government spending. The farewell speech comes as the Democratic Party has little influence in national politics, and Trump has appointed a series of Cabinet members who challenge traditional American alliances and government norms.
A veteran of American politics, having served as a senator and vice president under Obama, Biden ran for president in 2020 as a transitional figure, but decided at the unprecedented age of 80 to run for reelection. Initially convinced that he was the only one capable of defeating Trump, he was later forced to withdraw in July after a disastrous debate against the Republican. (A2 Televizion)
