Two Russian ships filled with oil sink in the Black Sea

Two Russian oil tankers with 29 crew members have sunk in the Black Sea, Russian authorities have confirmed.

Footage released by Russia's Southern Transport Prosecutor's Office shows one of the ships split in half and sinking, with signs of oil visible in the water. At least one crew member was killed. The other ship suffered extensive damage.

The incident took place in the Kerch Strait, which separates Russia from the occupied Crimean peninsula. President Vladimir Putin has ordered the creation of a task force, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Savelyev, to investigate the incident, while authorities suspect that Ukraine may be involved in this event.

A rescue operation is underway, involving tugboats, helicopters and more than 50 personnel. The damaged vessels, Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239, can carry up to 4,200 tons of oil each. (A2 Televizion)
