Finland investigates damage caused to underwater electrical cables with Estonia

Finland's Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said authorities in his country are investigating the damage caused to undersea power cables that are connected to Estonia.

An unplanned outage on the 'Estlink 2' line occurred during the day according to the announcement of the Finnish company Fingrid, reducing the production capacity to 358 megawatts from over 1,000 which is its full capacity.

"Despite the Christmas holiday, the authorities are on standby to investigate the matter," Prime Minister Orpo said in a post on social network X.

The outage did not affect Finland's electricity supply, he added.

Authorities in the region have been on high alert to respond to possible cases of sabotage after a spate of damage to power cables, gas pipelines and telephone lines in recent years. However, submarine cables often face technical problems and interruptions caused by accidents.

"An investigation into the incident has been launched", said in a statement one of the managers of the company Fingrid, Arto Pahki.
