Pope Francis died this morning at the age of 88. He was elected Pope in 2013, after Benedict XVI retired. He was the first Latin American Pope in history and the first from the Americas.
Before becoming Pope, he was Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires and the first non-European Pope in nearly 1,300 years.

Francis, seen on the left with his brother Oscar, was born on December 17, 1936. He was the eldest child of Mario and Regina Bergoglio, Italian immigrants to Argentina.
The Vatican announcement comes as Pope Francis spent his final days in church service, attending Easter celebrations and making a high-profile public appearance. Shortly before that, he held a brief meeting with US Vice President JD Vance.
