At least three people were seriously injured and several others suffered minor injuries after a car crashed into a group of people in the southwestern German city of Stuttgart. German media reported that the driver of the vehicle was not injured. He was arrested and is being questioned.
After a preliminary investigation, Stuttgart Police said they believe it was a tragic traffic accident. "There are currently no signs of an attack or a deliberate act," police said in X.
"The man who was stopped did not try to escape," a police spokesman responded to media inquiries, referring to the driver of the black Mercedes that hit several people.
The incident occurred in the Olgaeck area and officers were on the scene in large numbers.
The vehicle involved in the incident, a luxury Mercedes G-Class SUV, remained at the scene near a tram stop. According to a police spokesman, service at the tram stop was suspended.
Police said the operation was ongoing and that there were currently strict traffic restrictions in the center of Stuttgart, which is the capital of Baden-Württemberg.
Meanwhile, the Stuttgart Fire Brigade said it responded to a serious traffic accident with multiple injuries in the city center.
"The area is cordoned off and the injured are being treated at the scene," she said in X.
The fire department later added that several people were injured in the accident, including some in serious condition.
The road accident comes after Germany experienced several deadly car attacks in recent months, including in the eastern city of Magdeburg and the southern city of Munich. (A2 Televizion)
