Syrian security forces are believed to have killed hundreds of civilians belonging to the Alawite religious minority during ongoing violence along the country's coastal area.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 745 civilians were killed in about 30 massacres targeting Alawites on Friday and Saturday, but international media outlets have not been able to independently confirm the figures.
As reported, hundreds of people have fled their homes in the region known as the heartland of President Bashar Al Assad, who belongs to the Alawite sect, writes A2 CNN.
A total of 1,000 people have been killed in the past two days, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, in the worst outbreak of violence since rebel forces toppled the regime of Bashar al-Assad.
The toll includes about 148 pro-Assad fighters and at least 128 members of the Islamist-led government security forces who are fighting in Latakia and Tartus. The Alawites, a branch of Shiite Islam, make up about 10 percent of Syria's Sunni-majority population. (A2 Televizion)
