Israel's security cabinet will meet today to give final approval to a deal with the militant group Hamas for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the agreement has been reached, after overcoming recent disagreements with Hamas, A2 CNN reports.
Amid deep divisions within the cabinet, Israel postponed the meeting during which the pact was to be voted on, blaming Hamas for this. But later, Netanyahu was informed by the negotiating teams that the differences related to the release of Palestinian hostages and prisoners had been resolved, writes A2 CNN.
But as the ceasefire is expected to take effect on Sunday, Gaza residents continue to experience dramatic hours. Israeli jets have continued their intense attacks, with Palestinian authorities saying that over 100 people, including 27 children and 31 women, have been killed in the past two days, and 264 others have been injured, A2 CNN reports.
Airstrikes hit a number of areas around Gaza on Friday morning. White House spokesman John Kirby said Washington believed a ceasefire in the 15-month conflict would begin to take effect this weekend. (A2 Televizion)
