The United States wants Ukraine to hold elections, potentially by the end of the year, especially if Kiev reaches a ceasefire agreement with Russia in the coming months, US official Keith Kellogg said in an interview with Reuters news agency.
Kellogg, the US envoy for Ukraine and Russia, has said that Ukraine's parliamentary and presidential elections, suspended during the war, "must be held."
"Most democratic countries hold elections in times of war. I think it's important that they do that," Kellogg said.
"It's good for democracy. That's the good of solid democracy, when you have more than one person in the race."
Trump and Kellogg have said they are working on a plan to broker a deal in the first months of the US administration to end Russia's war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
They have revealed few details about their strategy for ending the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II.
It is currently unclear how Trump's proposal might be received in Kiev.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Ukraine will hold elections this year if the fighting ends and if there are strong security guarantees that would prevent Russia from resuming hostilities.
A senior adviser in Kiev and a source inside the Ukrainian government told Reuters that the Trump administration has not formally asked Ukraine to hold presidential elections by the end of the year. REL (A2 Televizion)
