From prison in The Hague, former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte is elected

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who is in custody in The Hague due to investigations by the International Criminal Court into his bloody war on drugs, has been re-elected as mayor of his hometown of Davao, A2 CNN reports. Preliminary results from the midterm elections show that the Duterte family continues to hold power in the south of the country.

Despite his arrest in March and immediate transfer to The Hague, Duterte's name remained on the ballot, as he has not yet been convicted. His re-election was no surprise, as the Duterte family has controlled Davao since the 1980s. His youngest son, Sebastian Duterte, was elected vice president, while his other son, Paolo Duterte, was re-elected as a congressman. His grandchildren also won local offices.

Meanwhile, Duterte's closest allies, Senator Bong Go and former police chief Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa, were re-elected to the Senate. They were key figures in implementing the tough anti-drug policy during Duterte's presidency.

The election was held in a tense atmosphere, dominated by the political rivalry between the Duterte and Marcos families. Incumbent President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., once an ally of the Duterte family, is now in open conflict with Vice President Sara Duterte, the former president's daughter. She faces possible impeachment proceedings by the Senate, and her political fate remains unclear.

Despite the tensions, the Duterte family appears to have maintained its powerful base in the south of the country, strengthening its position for the 2028 presidential elections. (A2 Televizion)
