After a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Kamchatka Peninsula, images from Severo-Kurilsk show the effects of a tsunami. Massive waves reached the city in the Kuril Islands, carrying debris, sand and the remains of damaged structures.
As the waters receded, the coastline was transformed into a surreal landscape. No casualties were reported, but the force of nature left visible marks on the coast. The population remains evacuated to the highlands, while waiting for the all-clear.
Tsunami waves of up to 3-4 meters have been reported in Kamchatka, while 30 cm waves have hit a city in Hokkaido, northern Japan.
