German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has dissolved the Bundestag, paving the way for new elections. The elections are scheduled to be held on February 23 next year. He first reacted to the collapse of the tricolor coalition in November and the loss of a vote of confidence by Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) in the Bundestag just before Christmas.
"Dear fellow citizens, I have decided today to dissolve the 20th German Bundestag and call new elections for February 23 next year. A letter to this effect has just been submitted to the President of the German Bundestag. According to the vote of confidence, the current government there is no more majority. However, I have not been able to recognize any majority for a different government. Therefore, I am convinced that now the new election is on the right way forward our country", said Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of Germany.
The next federal government has big tasks ahead of it, Steinmeier said. "That is why the coming weeks must be about finding the best solutions to the challenges of our time. He mentioned the uncertain economic situation, which is causing difficulties for companies and endangering jobs, as well as the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, which have also had effects in Germany. The urgent issue of immigration control and integration, climate change and peaceful and safe coexistence in our country remains a problem, said the President of Germany.
Regardless of how the elections will turn out, one thing is certain: the new Bundestag will have a completely different composition from the previous one, German media point out. Above all, it will be much smaller. Because after the reform of the electoral law of the tricolor coalition, the number of mandates will be limited to 630. This is mainly achieved by eliminating the excess and compensation mandates. In 2021, 735 members were elected to the Bundestag. The conservatives have a comfortable lead of more than 10 points over the SPD in most polls. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is just ahead of Scholz's party, while the Greens are in fourth place. (A2 Televizion)
