United States President Donald Trump said on Monday that he is not holding talks with Iran, quickly reversing his stance last week when he had claimed that talks with Tehran would take place very soon, despite Iran denying this.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote on Monday that he is "not offering Iran anything... nor have I been talking to them since we completely destroyed their nuclear facilities."
The United States bombed three key Iranian nuclear facilities on June 22, including the fortified underground facility at Fordow.
Trump appeared to be responding to comments by Democratic Senator Chris Coons, who questioned Trump's previous statements that China could resume buying oil from Iran following the US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Iran on June 24.
"Either President Trump doesn't know that his administration has imposed devastating sanctions on Iranian oil, or he doesn't care if our adversaries violate those sanctions. I don't know which is more troubling," Coons wrote in X.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei accused the Trump administration on Monday of constantly changing positions.
"These constant changes and mixed signals, which have become a regular pattern of American behavior over the last three or four months, are not something we can rely on," he said during his weekly press conference.
The extent of the damage to Iran's nuclear program during the 12-day war with Israel remains unclear.
Iran says its nuclear facilities have suffered major damage, but has vowed to continue its program, which it describes as peaceful.
Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said last week that Iran could resume uranium enrichment "within a few months."
"Frankly speaking, it cannot be said that everything is gone and that nothing is left," he said./REL (A2 Televizion)
