Biggest rearmament in 70 years, Sweden buys 44 new German Leopard 2 tanks

Europe is engulfed in a feverish arms race. The Russian threat has increased military spending for European countries and especially for those countries that have a border with Russia.

According to international media information, it turns out that Sweden has bought 44 new German combat tanks 'Leopard 2 A8'. In addition, the 66 existing Leopard 2 tanks from the Swedish defense inventory will be extensively modernized, as well as other combat vehicles, Sweden's Ministry of Defense emphasized.

Overall, the measures will cost Swedes around 22 billion kroner (around 1.9 billion euros) over the next few years. This aims to significantly strengthen the defense capabilities of the Scandinavian EU country and contribute to the completion of the four brigades currently being raised, according to the ministry.

Due to the worsening security situation, the largest rearmament since the 1950s is being undertaken, Defense Minister Paul Johnson explained. Investments in tanks and combat vehicles are an important part of this.

According to information, the responsible Swedish authority FMV has signed an agreement with the German-French arms company KNDS for the delivery of new Leopard tanks. Ten of them are intended to replace the tanks that Sweden donated to Ukraine. The new tanks are scheduled to be delivered from 2028 and possibly until 2031. In Sweden they will be called Stridsvagn 123.

Earlier it was Germany which adopted an ambitious weapons program, which also brought clashes within Olaf Scholz's tricolor coalition. (A2 Televizion)
