US launches wave of airstrikes against Houthi group in Yemen, Trump follows

The US has launched a wave of “decisive and powerful” airstrikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen. US-led strikes against the Houthi in Yemen have left at least 31 dead and 101 wounded, according to a new toll released today by the rebels’ health ministry.

President Donald Trump has cited the armed group's attacks on ships in the Red Sea as the reason for this decision.

"Funded by Iran, the Houthi bandits have fired missiles at American aircraft and targeted our troops and allies," Trump wrote on his social platform "Truth," adding that their "piracy, violence and terrorism" had cost "billions of dollars" and put lives at risk, reports A2 CNN.

The attacks targeted the capital Sanaa, the governorates of Saada (in the northwest) and Al-Bayda (in the center) and the city of Radaa (in the center), ministry spokesman Anis Al-Asbahi wrote on X.

The first strike against Yemeni rebels under the second Trump administration was carried out exclusively by the United States, a US official said.

The White House posted on Twitter photos of Donald Trump remotely observing the strikes he ordered against the Houthi arsenal. In one image, the president is seen wearing a white T-shirt and a red hat with the inscription "Make America Great Again", his hands on his belt and his headphones as he looks at a screen. In another, he is photographed from behind. Another post shows a US fighter jet taking off from an aircraft carrier on its mission, writes A2 CNN.

The group, which began targeting ships in response to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, said its forces would respond to US attacks.

Since November 2023, the Houthis have launched more than 100 attacks on ships they see as linked to Israel, as well as the United States and the United Kingdom, claiming to stand in solidarity with the Palestinians in Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza. In the past, the United States, Israel and Britain have struck Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen. (A2 Televizion)
