Spain "declares war" on foreigners: 100% tax on properties purchased

Spain plans to impose a tax of up to 100% of the value on properties purchased by non-residents from countries outside the EU, such as the United Kingdom.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced the measure, saying it was necessary to solve the country's housing emergency. "The West faces a crucial challenge: not to become a society divided into two classes, rich landlords and poor tenants," he said.

According to Sanchez, in 2023, non-residents from countries outside the EU bought 27,000 properties in Spain, not to live in them, but to profit from them. "And we cannot allow this," the prime minister said.

He did not provide details on how this tax would work or a deadline for its submission to parliament for approval, where there have often been difficulties in securing the votes needed to pass laws.

However, his government said the proposal would be finalized “after careful study.” This is just one of the measures planned by the prime minister on Monday to improve the housing situation in the country.

Other measures include a tax exemption for landlords who provide affordable housing, the transfer of more than 3,000 homes to a new public housing company, and higher taxes on tourist apartments. “It is not fair that those who have three, four or five short-term rental apartments pay less tax than hotels,” he said.
