United States President Donald Trump has said in a statement that 80% tariffs on Chinese goods "seem fair" as US representatives prepare for weekend talks to stem a trade war between the world's two largest economies.
"China should open their market to the US - it would be great for them!!! Closed markets don't work anymore!!!" Trump said, in a Truth Social post.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and the country's chief trade negotiator will meet Chinese officials in Switzerland for talks that could be the first step toward resolving their trade dispute.
Since taking office in January, Trump has increased tariffs on imports from China to 145%, in addition to those he imposed on many Chinese goods during his first term and duties imposed on Beijing by the Biden administration. (A2 Televizion)
