French authorities have issued a new arrest warrant for former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on charges of complicity in war crimes.
Two French judges issued the order after an investigation found that Assad was allegedly responsible for a bombing in the Syrian city of Deraa in 2017 that killed Salah Abou Nabout, a Franco-Syrian citizen and former French teacher.
The victim, 59, was killed on June 7, 2017, when his house was bombed by Syrian army helicopters. The French court said Assad had ordered and provided the means to carry out the attack.
This is the second warrant issued by French authorities for the former Syrian leader. The first was issued in 2023 for his involvement in the 2013 chemical weapons attacks that killed over 1,000 people.
Omar Abou Nabout, the son of Salah Abou Nabout, has expressed hope that there will be a judicial process where those who committed these crimes will be arrested and tried wherever they are. He stressed that this case is the culmination of a long fight for justice for his family.
