At least 12 people were killed and several others injured after a stampede during a Hindu religious festival in northern India. Tens of millions of people had gathered to take part in a ritual bathing in a river as part of the six-week festival.
The tragedy occurred between 1 and 2 a.m. near the ascetics' arena, where barricades had been set up to manage large crowds during the holy immersion. Witnesses said there was a massive stampede near the confluence of three sacred rivers, causing devotees to fall on top of each other. A woman who was part of the crowd said people repeatedly stepped on her and her mother as they fell.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to believers who lost relatives in the tragedy, but did not specify the number of victims. (A2 Televizion)
