Trump threatens EU with trade tariffs, first reactions from Union countries

Leaders and officials from around the world have reacted to the announcement of tariffs announced by Donald Trump this morning on the EU.

Foreign media have published the reactions of several countries such as Poland, Luxembourg, Finland, France, and the reaction of the EU's Foreign Policy Chief herself.

Poland

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said: "Poland will certainly be a country that encourages joint work and care. But we must also say clearly that any plan to introduce tariffs and trade wars [of wages] is a big mistake."

Luxembourg

Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden said that the response to trade tariffs is the response with the same measures.

"I think tariffs are always bad. Tariffs are bad for trade. Tariffs are bad for the United States," he said.

European Union

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said there were no winners in a trade war and if the US and Europe start one "then the one laughing on the sidelines is China."

"We are very interconnected. We need America and America needs us too," she said, writes A2 CNN.

finland

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said Europe should negotiate with Trump on trade.

"The most important thing we all need to understand is that Russia is a threat, a real threat. This is not an opinion, this is a fact," he said.

France

The governor of the French Central Bank, Francois Villeroy de Galhau, said that the tariffs imposed by Trump "will increase economic uncertainty."

Villeroy, who is also a European Central Bank policymaker, said Trump's tariffs were "very brutal" and would hit the auto sector particularly hard.

Regarding possible retaliatory measures, Villeroy said that such a response should not be ruled out, but he urged caution.

"The key is to make our economy stronger," he said, writes A2 CNN. (A2 Televizion)
