Donald Trump has announced that a meeting is being organized between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The US president-elect gave no time frame for when the meeting might take place. "He wants to meet me and we're working this out," he said in a speech at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Russian news agency Tass quotes Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying that the US has not yet formally requested a meeting. Trump has promised to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine immediately after taking office on January 20 and has expressed skepticism about US military and financial support for Kiev.
"President Putin wants to meet," he said Thursday. "He's even said that publicly and we need to end that war. This is a bloody mess." Trump has named Keith Kellogg, a former national security adviser and retired lieutenant general in the US Army, as special envoy to Ukraine and Russia for his second administration.
Meanwhile, the troops have advanced further into Ukraine. They have installed a bridge on the west bank of the Oskil River, increasing pressure on Ukrainian forces in the Kharkiv region. The Russian army had repeatedly tried to cross this river, near the city of Kupyansk. "The enemy is trying to consolidate his position in the community of Dvorichna and expand the bridge," said Andrii Besedin, head of the Kupyansk military command. He warned that the situation is extremely difficult for Ukrainian forces as the invaders are trying to push them back.
Moscow's troops are strengthening their positions in several sectors of eastern Ukraine and on Monday announced that they had captured the town of Kurakhove, in the Donetsk region. However, Kiev denies that this particular city fell to the invaders and maintains that fighting in the area is still raging. (A2 Televizion)
