Thursday morning did not find the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, in the office, nor in any activity of the institution.
Accompanied by some of his subordinates, for the second time within the year, Veliaj crossed the threshold of SPAK, in response to a summons from the special prosecutors. For the following five hours and 15 minutes, Veliaj gave explanations regarding an investigation initiated by SPAK for suspicions of the criminal offense of "passive corruption of high state officials or local elected officials".
According to the sources, Veliaj was asked in the capacity of a person who has knowledge about the circumstances of the investigation. While the mayor extinguished the interest of the prosecutors, a small number of citizens arrived outside SPAK, representatives of families affected by the reconstruction process in the area of Kombinat and May 5.
Together with banners against the mayor, they laid a red carpet in front of the SPAK entrance, at which point the police intervened to move them. The same awaited the moment of Veliaj's exit from SPAK with insulting calls and celebratory means.
Among the high interest of the media, protesters, but also some bodyguards, the mayor chose not to share any comments, except for the announcement that he would speak to the Municipal Council.
For the same SPAK investigation on Monday, Ajola Xoxa, Veliaj's wife, gave explanations for three hours at SPAK, since two weeks ago she confiscated your mobile phone. With the permission of the court, 4 other people were searched, apartments owned by the mayor's brother, as well as some office premises, where written documents and electronic devices were seized.
During this week, the courts rejected the request of Xoxas and her brother-in-law for the return of blocked items, as well as the appeal against SPAK controls. (A2 Televizion)
