The Chairman of the Central Election Commission, Ilirjan Celibashi, has explained how the case of Ilir Meta will be handled, if he is elected MP from the joint list of the coalition led by the Democratic Party, the Alliance for a Greater Albania.
Celibashi made the comments during a statement to the media, where he said that he cannot at this moment make a decision on an issue, which, according to him, could potentially be the subject of review by the commissioner, and even by other institutions.
He added that what the Constitution provides is the fact that every candidate for deputy who is declared the winner, wins the mandate from the moment the relevant electoral commission confirms him as such, as the winning candidate.
Excerpts from the discussion:
Journalist's question: My question has to do with the multi-name candidate lists, specifically with a specific name that will be part of the DP coalition, the Alliance for a Greater Albania. It is about the name of Ilir Meta, who is expected to be one of the candidates in the May 11 elections and is likely to be on the safe lists, also referring to the agreement between the parties. Meta is known to have been in detention for months. In the case when Meta will emerge as an MP from the May 11 elections, what happens next? I remember that we had a similar case in 2001 with Azgan Haklaj in Tropoja and that time you were the chairman of the CEC.
Celibashi: I cannot at this moment give a decision on an issue that could potentially be the subject of review by the commissioner and even by other institutions. What the Constitution provides is the fact that every candidate for deputy who is declared the winner, wins the mandate from the moment the relevant electoral commission confirms him as such, as the winning candidate.
