Fair-Play hits hard in the Premier League, Everton are deducted 10 points

Historic blow to the Premier League in terms of Financial Fair Play rules. The "victim" is Everton, which is penalized by removing 10 points in the ranking, as the club has not respected the rules for profits and financial stability.

It is the first time that such a heavy sanction is imposed on an English club, after the end of the controls that started last March and were entrusted to an independent commission, which also proposed the punishment.

The team from Liverpool thus slips to the bottom of the table, with only 4 points, but has decided to appeal the decision taken by the English football government.

" The club does not understand the accusation made by the Premier League and the severity of the sanction imposed by the commission neither fairly nor reasonably reflects the evidence presented. The club will carefully monitor the decisions made in any other similar cases that it is related to the rules of Financial Fairplay ", reads a response from Everton.

Everton had recorded a loss on the balance sheet for the fifth consecutive year, following a deficit of £44.7 million in the 2021-2022 season. Under the rules, Premier League clubs can lose no more than £105m in a three-year period and Everton admitted they had breached the rules, with a £124m deficit.

Only two other clubs have previously received a penalty in the Premier League.

Middlesbrough were deducted 3 points during the 1996-97 season, while Portsmouth were deducted 9 points in 2010 after going into administration and both clubs ended up relegated at the end of the season. (A2 Televizion)
