Another incident of racism has rocked Spanish football during the match between Espanyol and Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
In the 16th minute of the match, referee Cuadra Fernandez activated the anti-racism protocol, following a report from Athletic Bilbao striker Inaki Williams, who said he had heard racist insults towards his teammate, Maroan Sannadi.
To address the situation, the match was stopped for three minutes, during which a message was broadcast from the stadium announcer asking fans to stop the racist abuse. The referee also threatened that the match could be permanently abandoned if there were further similar incidents.
Inaki Williams, who has been the victim of similar treatment in the past, reported that the insults were directed from a section of the stand where Espanyol fans were located.
"This should not happen. It is not the first time it has happened here. The referee reacted very well, this should be highlighted and the culprits should be punished," declared Iñaki Williams, calling for strong measures against racist behavior in stadiums. (A2 Televizion)
