Nottingham Forest striker in coma after colliding with post during match

Nottingham Forest's Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in an induced coma after undergoing emergency surgery for a serious abdominal injury suffered during the match against Leicester City last Sunday.

The incident occurred when Awoniyi collided with the goal post while attempting to put the ball into the net after a cross from Anthony Elanga, writes A2 CNN. Despite the obvious pain, the player continued to play for the final 10 minutes of the match, after signaling to the medical staff that he could play.

In a statement on Tuesday, Nottingham Forest confirmed that Awoniyi had undergone major surgery and was recovering well. According to British media outlets such as the BBC and Sky Sports, the player has been placed in an induced coma as part of his recovery process.

The injury and his treatment on the pitch sparked heated debate, with reports of a clash between club owner Evangelos Marinakis and coach Nuno Espírito Santo. Marinakis reportedly objected to the medical staff's decision to allow Awoniyi to continue playing.

After the match, Espírito Santo clarified that the discussion with the owner was only related to the medical decision and not the team's performance. The club, through an official statement, denied reports of a confrontation between the parties and criticized commentators for spreading misinformation.

Taiwo Awoniyi, who joined Forest from Union Berlin in 2022, has scored 17 goals in 73 Premier League appearances. (A2 Televizion)
