Terry Venables, the famous English former footballer and coach, has died at the age of 80.
Venables has had a long career as a coach, in many teams. Venables has coached England, Australia, Barcelona and Tottenham. Terry Venables led England to Euro 1996, although he was unable to give the Three Lions the European title as they were knocked out in the semi-finals.
"We are completely devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father, who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness," said a statement from Venables' family, in which they confirmed the fatal loss.
With Barcelona, he reached the Champions Cup final in the 1985-86 season, but lost on penalties against Steaua Bucharest. With Barcelona he won the championship in 1984-1985 and the Cup in 1986.
Venables has always been considered an idol at Tottenham, Queen Park Rangers and especially Crystal Palace, a club where he retired from playing football and managed the team in more than 200 games. He was assistant to Steve McLaren with England (2006-2007) and did very well with Australia.
As a footballer, he played 204 games with Chelsea, and also wore the shirt of Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers.
With England it has been collected only twice, in 1964.
