The footage shows the artist unfurling the flag at the end of the performance, while someone from backstage tries unsuccessfully to snatch it from his hand. His action was interpreted by many as a political statement in support of the Palestinian cause, while others called it an inappropriate intervention in an art scene.
Following the incident, a spokesperson for the Royal Ballet and Opera stated: "The display of the flag was an unauthorised act by the artist. It was not approved by the Royal Ballet and Opera and represents a completely inappropriate act."
