A couple has been compensated more than 700 euros after experiencing an emergency diversion on a Spanish Iberia flight. The complaint was initiated by the Spanish consumer organization, FACUA, but was later sent to the Spanish Air Safety Agency and its Italian counterpart, Ente Nazionale per l'Aviazione Civile, due to the airline's refusal.
According to the testimony, the couple was flying from Rome to Madrid after a delay of more than 40 minutes at boarding. After the flight took off, the crew announced that the plane would be diverted to Barcelona's El Prat airport due to smoke in the cabin, writes A2 CNN.
In Barcelona, and in compliance with European legislation, Iberia gave passengers a 16 euro voucher for food and drinks, but did not guarantee when they would depart for Madrid. The couple decided to take a taxi to Sants station and book two tickets to travel to the capital.
After the complaint was filed, Iberia apologized but refused to compensate the couple. So they turned to FACUA. However, this organization also failed to get the company to take action, and the case was sent to the Spanish Air Safety Agency and the Ente Nazionale per l'Aviazione Civile in Italy.
