The word of the year for 2023 is "rizz," according to the publishers of the Oxford English Dictionary. Rizz took the baton from "Swiftie," as fans of Taylor Swift are called, and other phrases like "situationship" and "de-influencing" that are widely used on social media.

In the "race" for the word of the year were eight such, all chosen to reflect the mood, moral or preoccupations of the year 2023.

A shorter list of words was put to a public vote before Oxford lexicographers made the final decision.

But what is rizz?

This word may not mean anything to you if you are not part of Generation Z. However, the word has been used massively online, with billions of users using the hashtag "rizz" on TikTok.

According to Oxford University Press, which publishes the Oxford English Dictionary, rizz means style, charm, or can refer to someone who has the ability to attract/seduce a partner.
