This is the ugliest fish in the world

After being dubbed the world's ugliest fish for its wrinkled appearance and gelatinous shape, the blobfish has made a remarkable comeback. This week, it was crowned "Fish of the Year" by an environmental organization in New Zealand, writes A2 CNN.

The annual competition, organised by the Mountain to Sea Conservation Trust, aims to raise awareness of New Zealand's aquatic life. This year, the blobfish won the prestigious title with nearly 1,300 votes out of more than 5,500.

This is a major victory for the fish, which became famous as the mascot of the “Society for the Preservation of Injured Animals” in 2013. The blobfish lives on the seabed and can reach up to 30 cm in length. It is mainly found off the coast of Australia and Tasmania, at depths of 600 to 1200 meters.

Although it is known for its strange shape, in its natural deep-sea habitat it looks like a normal fish, as the high water pressure keeps its body shape stable. But when it is quickly brought to the surface, its body loses structure and takes on a characteristic soft and deformed appearance.

Nine of the ten nominees for this award are considered endangered, including the blobfish, which is threatened by deep-sea fishing. This award aims to raise awareness for their conservation. (A2 Televizion)
