On June 27, the sky above Gratiot Avenue in Detroit, near Conner Street, was covered with bills, money and rose petals — an unusual but touching farewell to Darrell “Plant” Thomas, a beloved figure on Detroit’s east side.

Thomas died on June 15 at the age of fifty-eight. His sons, Darell and Jonte, decided to pay their respects in a unique way: they arranged for a helicopter to drop five thousand dollars and rose petals on the Show Room Shine Express car wash, which Thomas owned, at exactly one twenty-seven o'clock.

It's a place that has a special meaning to him - it was there, at 1041 Gratiot Avenue, that Thomas created his small business and the story of everyday life.

"It was his final expression of love for the community, because he was always giving," said his granddaughter Crystal Perry. "Yesterday was just a day of saying goodbye to an Eastside legend."

In addition to being a car wash owner, Thomas was also a licensed professional drag racer under the auspices of the National Drag Racing Association (NHRA), and above all - a brother, father, grandfather and much more, as highlighted in the video of his funeral at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

"To know Uncle Plant was to love him. He would do anything for anyone. He had a heart that is rare to find today," he said,  KosovaPress reports.
