Many of us see the lock icon in Google Chrome almost every day, but it turns out that many have no idea what it shows. Experts say that ignorance in this regard can put us in danger.
Cardiff Metropolitan University has conducted a study and its results have shown that while 63 percent of people think they know what this icon means, only 7 percent are right.
Contrary to what most people think, this symbol does not indicate whether the "site" is safe or not. The padlock symbol, according to experts, actually indicates whether data sent from your computer is encrypted. Fiona Carroll, who was the person who played the main role in this study, surveyed over 500 people aged 18 to 86, who asked them what the 'lock icon' in Google Chrome means.
A very small percentage of people surveyed gave the correct answer, saying that the data being sent from the web server to the computer is encrypted with a system called HTTPS. This means that the data cannot be accessed by third parties, but the site itself may be insecure about it. (A2 Televizion)
