Artificial Intelligence and the impact it will have on our society has been one of the main topics of debate in 2023. In this sense, the co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, made a prediction about artificial intelligence and the working day.
The American tycoon seems in favor of a 3-day work week. In order for this proposal to be viable, in an interview with Trevor Noah's "What Now?" podcast, he mentioned artificial intelligence as a determining factor. He gave as an example the advent of computers and their use at work to argue his answer: "I don't think the impact of artificial intelligence will be as disruptive as that of the industrial revolution, but it will definitely be as big as the introduction of the computer.”
Regarding this device, Gates claimed that it "changed forever" office work and defended the potential that artificial intelligence has: "It can change the labor market. In the future we will work less than today".
Likewise, he ruled out that the implementation of artificial intelligence at work will necessarily mean job losses: “If you free up the workforce, you can better help the elderly. The demand for work to do good things is still great.”
Although the debate still continues about the possible advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence, Bill Gates turned to the human aspect to defend his thesis: “The purpose of life is not only to work. If we manage as a society to work only three days a week, maybe it's better."
The length of working hours is an issue that is in focus both in Europe. In the case of our country, a maximum of 40 hours per week has been set. Compared to the rest of Europe, France reduced the week to 35 hours in the late 1990s, while in Belgium, for example, it is 38. The European country with the shortest working week is the Netherlands, with 31 hours and the longest , Serbia, by 42 hours, according to Eurostat.
