Former Serbian MP and activist, Dordje (Đorđe) Miketić, revealed in 'Weekend Diary' with journalist Erion Dushi on A2 CNN more details about the protests organized yesterday by students in Belgrade.
Miketić said that the protests are aimed at announcing new elections and introducing a list of intellectuals into political parties' lists for deputies.
He also added that the Serbian government and President Vučić are corrupt and are maintaining power by stealing votes.
Miketić also harshly criticized the Serbian Police, following the violence inflicted on protesters yesterday, A2 CNN reports.
"Everyone in Serbia is protesting. The protest that lasted more than 7 months, where students were involved, they protested against the social situation and now the protest is unstoppable. The students started it, but they were also supported by unions and other groups that fight against corruption. It is a non-political protest and the students started this protest by saying that they were not interested in politics or political parties.
But after 6 months, no political party in power has taken responsibility for the tragedy in Novi Sad. Now the students are demanding new elections and a list of new candidates and names, with professors who are intellectuals and are against the current government. They accuse Vučić of buying votes, even though he is considered a loser in these elections. The total amount of votes and the gathering of people is very large. The students say that Vučić has no reason for Vučić to stay in power.
We must understand that people are angry. As we have seen on TV, the violence of the Vučić regime is inexcusable. This is the least violent protest we have had in the last decade in Serbia. 200 thousand people took to the streets yesterday, which is 40% of the voters, even though Vučić turned off the public broadcasters. 4-5% of the people took to the streets yesterday. The police are working against the people,” Miketić said, among other things. (A2 Televizion)
