On the eve of Saturday's protest in Belgrade, Brnabic warns of continued

Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic said on Thursday that authorities will continue to arrest those who "prepare acts against the constitutional order and security of Serbia," ahead of the anti-government protest called for Saturday.

A day earlier, Serbian police arrested six people for allegedly planning to "change the government by force" at a protest that students have announced for June 28 in Belgrade.

"The action to arrest and identify these terrorist organizations will definitely continue. The President of Serbia will continue meetings with the security services and the high-ranking police in order to maintain constitutional order and prevent the bloodshed they planned on Vidovdan," Brnabic told Pink television.

The High Public Prosecutor's Office announced that the suspects agreed not to return home until they "killed or destroyed" representatives of state institutions, and that they announced the use of firearms and prepared "an attack on police officers with the aim of disarming them."

Brnabic "congratulated" the media that participated in the creation of a special show broadcast on June 25 on several pro-government television channels, which presented material about alleged plans for protests and blockades in Serbia over the past seven months.

The leader of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, Miloš Vučević, also said that he believes the arrests are not over and assessed that the security services should identify "all" those who, according to him, are planning to seize power by force.

Vucevic told Pink that these arrests "best confirm that the state has consolidated after the attempted color revolution."

On June 23rd, police also arrested Stefan Tomic, a student at the Faculty of Physics in Belgrade, on suspicion of "calling for a violent change of the constitutional order".

His arrest was condemned by students on the block, professors and citizens who gathered in protest on June 26 in front of the Palace of Justice in Belgrade, where Tomic is expected to be questioned.

Since the start of major protests in Serbia, police have repeatedly arrested students, professors and demonstrators - some of them on suspicion of attempting to violently overthrow the constitutional order.

One of the demands of the students in the blockade is to suspend the criminal proceedings against all of them, with the assessment that they were arrested in violation of the law and that this is a case of pressure and intimidation by the authorities.

Students began blockades of faculties and protests in late November 2024, demanding accountability from authorities for the deaths of 16 people in the collapse of a concrete shelter at the Novi Sad train station on November 1./ REL (A2 Televizion)
