Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević resigns after months of protests

Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević resigned on Tuesday after months of mass protests across the country. In his address to the citizens, Vučević said the reason for his resignation was the attack on students that took place last night in Novi Sad in front of the Serbian Progressive Party premises in that city.

"I think that this policy to which I belong, the party that I lead, I have won together with the President of the Republic in all elections since 2012. It must show everyone, more than once, the highest degree of responsibility, it must bring and show new rules of law in Serbian politics, it must show that it is the most responsible, that it is objectively the most responsible, and therefore after this event in Novi Sad, my irrevocable decision is to resign from the position of Prime Minister," said Vučević.

He added that this morning he had a conversation with President Aleksandar Vučić, who accepted his arguments and decision.

"In order not to further raise tensions in society, I made this decision that I communicated to you," said Vučević, who announced that the mayor of Novi Sad, Milan Đurić, will also resign today.

Vučević's resignation came just a day after President Aleksandar Vučić spoke of "an urgent and broad government reform" in response to demands put forward by striking university students in Serbia.

Belgrade has seen daily anti-government protests since a roof collapsed in November at a railway station in Novi Sad, Serbia's second largest city, killing 15 people.

Protesters including students, teachers and other workers have turned out in their thousands, blaming the disaster on corruption within the government of populist President Aleksandar Vucic. (A2 Televizion)
