Thousands of earthquakes, experts: Santorini moved 6 centimeters

The Greek island of Santorini has been experiencing increased seismic activity over the past month, with over 12,000 earthquakes recorded. According to the Greek Geodynamic Institute, the island has begun to shift, rising 4 cm and moving horizontally 6 cm since August 2024.

Experts believe that these changes are related to the movement of magma from the mantle to the earth's crust, especially in the area between Nea Kameni and Oia. Thanasis Ganas, director of research at the institution, stated that the situation is not yet alarming, but should be monitored carefully, writes A2 CNN.

Due to seismic activity, after Santorini and Yamourgi, the island of Anafiya has also been declared a state of emergency. Authorities are closely monitoring developments and are urging residents to follow instructions for their safety.

According to Greek authorities, from January 26 to February 8, more than 12,000 earthquakes were recorded in Santorini. (A2 Televizion)
