Parliament accepts Prime Minister's resignation, Serbia may go to elections

Serbia's parliament officially accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Miloš Vučević on Wednesday, starting a 30-day deadline to form a new government or call early elections.

Vucevic, the leader of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and an ally of President Aleksandar Vucic, resigned on January 28 following protests that erupted after a tent collapsed at a train station in Novi Sad in November, killing 15 people.

Over 100,000 protesters took to the streets of Belgrade on Saturday, accusing the government of corruption and mismanagement, which it denies. Under the constitution, Vucic must nominate a new prime minister by April 18. If he fails to do so, elections will be held within 45 to 60 days.

The parliamentary session, which began on March 4, was marked by tensions and clashes between opposition and government MPs. The protests, which began in Novi Sad, have spread across the country, challenging Vučić's rule. The opposition opposes early elections and calls for an interim government without the SNS, but Vučić has rejected this option. (A2 Televizion)
